Box Hill School - Art

Art is offered at Box Hill School through Key Stage 3, at GCSE and IB level. It is an extremely popular subject and our pupils gain excellent examination grades each year. After Box Hill, many of our students are accepted at major art schools including St Martins, Chelsea, Wimbledon, Goldsmiths, Epsom, Farnham and Surrey Institute of Art and Design.

Key Stage 3

Pupils in years 7-9 attend regular lessons which cover a broad variety of projects designed to explore the formal element of Art and Design; including line, shape, colour, surface and texture. These projects will nurture a pupil’s particular strength and will prepare them for GCSE Art if they should choose it.

GCSE

GCSE Art is studied in years 10 and 11 and covers the syllabus criteria of observational drawing, development of ideas, and establishing links with appropriate areas of Art History. Supplementary studies in sketch books are also encouraged and there are regular trips to London galleries and specific exhibitions.

IB

This is a rigorous pre-University course for the serious art student in years 12 and 13. It involves the production of course work on either paper or canvas and several sketch books on a chosen theme. Students are expected to “make connections” with appropriate areas of Art History and undertake investigation and research, relevant to the subject content of their work. The course will enable students to build an impressive body of work suitable for Art College entry.
