Chemistry is the study of all materials and is vital to every aspect of life. It is the study of substances, what they are made of, how they interact and what role they play in living things and the physical world about us.
Chemistry is a useful general academic subject to study for progression to higher education, training or employment as it develops analytical and problem solving skills and an appreciation of the need for accuracy and precision. Chemistry is a necessary subject to study if you wish to pursue an interest in science, the environment and engineering and it is essential for medicine or veterinary science.
Laboratory work is a significant feature of all chemistry courses and it is used to back up the theory and to develop experimental, analytical and investigative skills.
All pupils at Box Hill School study Chemistry as part of a broad, balanced curriculum until the end of Year 9. Chemistry forms part of an integrated science curriculum in Years 7 and 8.
It is a popular choice at IGCSE, where students are able to choose to study one, two or all three of the sciences. At IGCSE students take Edexcel IGCSE Chemistry.
It forms an important part of the IB programme and is offered at Higher and Standard Level.
