English is the study of language and how it is used to create meaning. In order to be successful in life students need to understand how to use the spoken and written word in order to communicate effectively. Literature is concerned with our conceptions, interpretations and experiences of the world. The study of literature, therefore, can be seen as a study of all the complex pursuits, anxieties, joys and fears that human beings are exposed to during their lifetime. As such English forms the cornerstone of lifelong learning.
The study of English enables students to develop their knowledge and understanding of language and literature through a wide range of opportunities: reading and response to both literary and non-literary texts, writing for a variety of purposes, as well as speaking and listening in a range of contexts.
All pupils at Box Hill School study English and English Literature as part of a broad, balanced curriculum until the end of GCSE. English and English Literature are also an essential part of the IB Diploma programme with all students taking one or the other as one of their six subjects.
English at Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) focuses on the key skills of reading, writing and speaking and listening with students studying a wide range of fiction, non-fiction and media texts.
At GCSE students take both English and English Literature AQA Specification B. The language course reflects the aims of the National Curriculum Order for English and is concerned with the development of speaking and listening, reading and the ability to construct meaning in written and Standard English. The literature course aims to encourage students to explore their literary interests and support them in developing their reading and awareness of social, historical and cultural influences on literature.
IB A1 English (Literature) is offered to students at both Higher and Standard Level. The course includes the study of African Literature, the Gothic genre, and a variety of plays exploring the human condition. We also offer A2 (language and literature) and B English (Language) to students for whom English is an additional language.
