History is one of the most rewarding and interesting subjects. Its instant appeal is reflected in the current popularity of narrative history on television, books, and in films. Many people enjoy a good story, hunger for knowledge of the past and have a desire to explore intellectual travel in time and place.
The study of History provides the opportunity to understand the past and also enables a valuable training in the skills of research, assimilation, comprehension and analysis of a wide range of material, the formulation of reasoned interpretation, and the development of an ability to communicate clear and coherent judgements.
All pupils at Box Hill School study History as part of a broad, balanced curriculum until the end of GCSE. History is a popular choice within the IB Diploma programme and regular trips are provided by the department to enhance the subject. In recent years students have been taken to Berlin and Munich and to History conferences in London. History in the first three years (Years 7-9) investigates themes from the time of the Norman Conquest to the Twentieth Century.
At GCSE students take Edexcel Modern World History. IB History is offered at Higher and Standard Level. The course includes a study of Twentieth Century Wars, the Rise and Rule of Single Party Dictatorships and a regional study of about one hundred years of European history.
