Box Hill School - Music

Music touches all people; whether it is in performing, composing or listening. It is a discipline which integrates its own unique skills with intellectual, physical, emotional and aesthetic development. Through an engagement with music, people can develop their creativity, understanding, co-ordination, spiritual awareness and confidence, while gaining a sense of achievement and enjoyment. Involvement in music can be an individual pursuit or it can require people to collaborate, listen to and hear each other. Students are encouraged to take risks, communicate clearly and develop individual responsibility and professional attitudes. Music can promote a sense of belonging and be a force for social good.

All pupils in Years 7 to 9 study music as a part of the curriculum. Pupils engage in performing, composing and listening activities as well as theory work. Topics studied during these three years include Blues, Elements of Music and World Music.

At GCSE students have an option to choose music. The school offers the Edexcel syllabus which incorporates performing, composing and listening.

IB Music is offered at both Higher and Standard Levels. The course includes comparison of two music cultures, study of a set music as well as composing, performing and listening.

Extra curricular Music

Music is an integral part of the life of the school. Over a quarter of the pupils play at least one musical instrument and many study two. The school offers a wide range of instruments for tuition including violin, trumpet, piano, voice, guitar and drums. Each year pupils enter for the music examinations including Associated Board, Trinity College and the Trinity Rock School and many achieve Merit or Distinction. Many are successful in local festivals. The school has a choir, wind ensemble, string ensemble, numerous rock/pop bands and other small ensembles.
