"The Board of Governors has unanimously decided that we should join the prestigious and world renowned group of schools that embrace the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme.
The intention is that as of September 2008, ‘A’ Levels at Box Hill will be replaced by the IB which is not only internationally respected, but is seen by UK Universities as better preparation based upon independent learning. Universities report a high retention rate and high employment rate for IB students and clearly value the excellent preparation the programme gives.
The UCAS point system awarded for IB students from 2008 is very generous as it supports and recognises the strengths of an all round education, something that Box Hill School has valued and promoted throughout its history.
The IB is a natural progression for Box Hill and suits our educational philosophy. It will clearly benefit the students of our school and anyone joining us in the future."
Mark Eagers, Headmaster
The IB Diploma Programme is designed as an academically challenging and balanced programme of education, with final examinations that prepare students, normally aged 16 to 18, for success at university and life beyond.
The programme is normally taught over two years and has gained recognition and respect from the world’s leading universities.
Since the late 1960s, the programme has:
- provided a package of education that balances subject breadth and depth, and considers the nature of knowledge across disciplines through the unique Theory of Knowledge course
- encouraged international mindedness in IB students, starting with a foundation in their own language and culture
- developed a positive attitude to learning that prepares students for university education
- gained a reputation for its rigorous external assessment with published global standards, making this a qualification welcomed by universities worldwide
- emphasized the development of the whole student — physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically.
The IB Diploma is itself a positive attitude to learning; encouraging students to ask challenging questions, to critically reflect, to develop research skills, and to learn how to learn. Like the International Baccalaureate Organisation, Box Hill School, encourages exploration and community service as well as academic achievement, so that the students get the most from their time with us. This is probably why the school has recently grown considerably and is in the middle of an ambitious and exciting development programme – the new dining hall (just opened) is the latest project to complete and we’re gearing up for our Jubilee Celebrations in 2009. There’s never been a better time to think about Box Hill School, so please, give us a call.
